PART TWO of the New Designers 2015 show opened this week in London with the New Designers Awards ceremony taking place on the evening of opening when awards were presented to winners in various categories by design commentator Max Fraser.
he New Designers Awards, which are presented in partnership with leading brands and organisations, were given to this year’s most talented design graduates in the fields of – Visual Communications (including Graphic Design & Illustration); Furniture & Product Design (including Spatial & Industrial Design) and Motion Arts and Theatre Design and recognise up-and-coming talents in the design world. As well as a cash prize, the awards offer the winners essential support as they commence their professional careers.
This year’s winner of Business Design Centre New Designer of the Year Award was Jack Lennie of Edinburgh Napier University for Tinker. The judges said of Lennie’s work, “We appreciated Jack’s project because his starting point was an approach to sustainability that was not predictable. Having found that 90 per cent of bikes were written off due to frame damage, he found a clever, innovative way of bringing scrap back to life. He was passionate, intelligent and articulate, and had thoughtful answers to our questions. His designs had a solution-driven aesthetic and the application of the concept could be far, far wider.”
The New Designer of the Year Runner Up was awarded to University of Cumbria’s Stephanie Kiewel for Funkenflug. New Designers John Lewis Award for Design Excellence and Innovation was won by Juwon Seo of Bucks New University for Work Nest. Sheffield Hallam University’s Jake Read New Designers won the Wilko & W’Innovate Award for Innovation for his design, Storm – a low-weight, portable dust-extractor for indoor building work.
